Ten Ways to Sell Scentsy

I have compiled a list of 10 ways to grow your Scentsy business without having to host tons of home parties... or bug your family and friends.

These are just a few ideas, but of course there are many ways to run your Scentsy business. (Just make sure you stay in compliance and avoid things like selling on eBay.)

1. Realtors

Realtors - you can work with them home staging, as well as new homebuyer gift baskets.  We can bundle their purchases to get them the best deal. They will most likely be buying a bunch at once, so you can really help make the most of the bundles for them.  Enter the items they want as a party order to give them the host rewards and shipping discount. 

Make sure you label the products with your consultant information, so the homebuyer can come back to you to buy more Scentsy. 

Another spin off to this approach is to work with a housing or apartment complex.  See if they will allow you to leave a warmer in the office with your info, a ballot box to draw for a prize, or even to add a flyer or samples to a new tenant bag.

2. Vendor events

Vendor events are perfect for networking and getting outside of your current circle.  Make sure you don’t just use it as a way to sell Scentsy, but also look for new team members. 

They are also a great way to schedule other party bookings so you get multiple benefits from the event!

3. Corporate Gifting

Corporate gifting includes working with business owners for their gift giving or incentives.  Find professionals like orthodontists who give gifts to referring dentists, or companies who give work anniversary gifts, holidays, business giveaways and incentives, etc.

4. Break Room Work Parties

This is a fun one.  Bring the Scentsy party to them!  Lunch work parties are a simple party setup you bring at lunch in the break room. 

Nobody has to go anywhere or clean their house, and it's a fun way to spend the lunch hour.  

5. Fundraisers

Fundraisers are a super way for any organization to make money for their cause.  Some ideas of where to look for fundraiser groups are sports teams, schools, choirs, pet rescues, dance teams, etc.

6. Online

Online is a great way to expand your business.  This includes creating a blog, finding bloggers to do a product review for you, or making videos for a YouTube channel. 

It can also include social media efforts, with things like creating a following on Instagram, sharing to a Facebook page, creating a private Facebook VIP group, or even hosting facebook parties online. 

7. Referrals

Referrals are such a great way to leverage your happy customers.  They love you and will introduce you to their friends as well.  Make sure to ask your current customers for referrals, sometimes they won't even think to share. 

Another great source of referrals is to have customers post pictures of their new products on social media and tag you.  That way their friends can see their personal recommendation and decide they need it too! 

8. Customer Service

Good customer care and follow up will make a big impact in your business. Taking good care of current customers allows you to keep the customers you have. That way you don’t have to find as many new ones. Make it easy for them to continue to buy from you!

9. Basket Parties

Basket parties are basically a catalog party, with a basket of samples or product testers.  You can book local basket party hosts, and also mail them away if you choose.

Many consultants have multiple sets of simple basket parties circulating all the time to keep sales coming in.  It also helps you expand your network and find new customers and hosts.

10. Build a Team

Recruit!  Build your team!  This one is kind of cheating, because it's technically not a way to sell Scentsy.  It is, however, a great way to make more money with your business.  Scentsy offers leadership bonuses that can greatly increase your paychecks as you lead and grow your team. 

You can’t stop selling and building your team, but recruiting and leading your team will multiply your efforts. You couldn’t possibly sell nearly as much as you would need to make a full-time income from your business.  Leverage the leadership component and find the joy in leading your team to success along with you!

The other day as I was at Costco filling up my car with gasoline. While I filled up, I overheard a conversation the woman in front of me was having on her phone. She was telling the person on the other end that their mutual friend was making a huge mistake; she was signing up for one of those "awful pyramid schemes”.

She continued her conversation saying things like:

Direct Selling Perception

I couldn’t believe just how much hatred this woman had for direct selling. Honestly, I didn’t think there were still people in the world that held that perception of direct selling. I'm not naive enough to think that everyone loves direct selling, but I was surprised at just how belligerent she was towards it. But I like to think that this woman is really just a victim of misinformation. She has never had the opportunity to actually get to know people working direct sales, and see their success.

Real Success

The reality is that 20 million people are involved in the $36.12 billion direct selling industry.  People involved in direct selling have a higher percentage of annual income over $50,000 when compared to all Americans. (58% vs. 50%)

Contrary to opinion, direct sellers also have a higher level of average education than the average American:  52% of are college graduates compared to 28% and 99% have high school diplomas compared to 85%.

Now, let’s talk about the rewards of being a Scentsy Consultant or direct seller. First, as in any business to look exclusively at the money would be limiting and not indicative of the real reasons people choose direct selling.

For example, when I applied for corporate jobs I always asked about things like healthcare, 401k, paid time off, culture, and work-life balance.  All of these were factors when I considered the job. Salary is just one thing to consider. Beyond income, research indicates that individuals enjoy the fringe benefits like the flexibility of being their own bosses.  We get to set our own hours and schedule, as well as ever having to ask for time off!

Income from Sales

When you talk about income as a Scentsy Consultant (or any direct sales) you have to remember that first, direct selling is, well, still selling. We make a commission from the sales we make.  As much as we talk about the other activities we spend the majority of our time doing like mentoring and recruiting, we still sell.  In Scentsy, we have to sell a certain amount to get paid on the production of our team.

Secondly, Scentsy Consultants are paid monthly and every month is different. We don't receive a set salary, or any guaranteed amount.  For instance, some months - like October and November - are huge sales months with consumers gearing up for the holidays.  Those months, the money you make as a Scentsy Consultant will more likely be higher than other months.  Commissions income is dependent on your own sales, so you do have control over your paycheck. You can work to make the amount you want, or to make consistent checks, but it will most likely vary naturally.

Thirdly, there is a large percentage of Consultants who join a direct selling company to buy their favorite products at a discount, NOT to make a living off it. And since individuals are paid based on their work and level of effort and time dedicated to their business, those who are working it like a part-time job earn a part-time income. It's important to remember that is exactly what they want out of it. 

Direct Sales Average Income

The first data I found went back to 2011 when Amy Robinson, a spokesperson for the Direct Selling Association, said that the median annual income for direct sales consultants in 2011 was $2,400. As I dug further I found that research done by Harris Poll in 2014 provided some more up to date information. According to the research -

Doing some simple math, that means that 2.4 million direct sellers earned more than $50,000 based on 2014 figures. The article points out that beats the national average salary for men and women.  It also is more than the national median annual salary for all Americans working a 40-hour workweek as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Dec. 2013.

Now, that’s only 15% of those involved in direct selling, but that’s also about the percentage of consultants actually working their business. The research indicates that 70% of Consultants spend less than 15 hours/week on their business. An important note to add here is that those 15% earning that $50,000 and up are doing it how, when, and where they want to.

Can I make money with Scentsy?

In summary, can you make money in direct selling?

The answer is of course, yes. The most important things to remember are;

If benefits like a flexible schedule, more time with family, being your own boss, and setting your own hours are appealing to you, then you would be an awesome Scentsy consultant.  As long as you are comfortable as an entrepreneur with risk and have a good work ethic, then it sounds like it’s a great fit for you. If not, and you prefer punching in and out for a guaranteed paycheck, then this might not be your ideal way to make money.

3 Ways to Improve Your Recruiting Today

It's been said, “Sales is money today and recruits are money for tomorrow”. And if you’ve seen our video showing the actual data breaking down our commission paychecks, (Scentsy paycheck breakdown) you’ve seen that the greatest growth opportunity as a Scentsy Consultant is in the Frontline and Director Generation bonus. Essentially, the more you grow your team and help them experience success, the more you are compensated for your success in those areas.

So finding new individuals to join you on your Scentsy journey is always top of mind for anyone serious about making a living off their Scentsy business. Recruiting can also be a very nerve-wracking experience and leave both the Scentsy Consultant and the potential recruit feeling awkward and weird. Nobody likes awkward and weird. Here are three things that I’ve found consistently help me and my team get our game face on and have better, more natural conversations with a better success rate.

First, change your perspective.

Too often our perspective when we’re recruiting is not dissimilar to begging and pleading. We make a goal to recruit so many or to have so many conversations with people so diligently we head out to “do our duty”, get out of our comfort zone, and find some new teammates. And before we know it, seconds into our first conversation, we freeze and have that, “I want to barf. Why am I doing this?” feeling in our gut.

Perception is Reality. To change your reality change your perspective. If the thought of recruiting makes you sweat and feels like a massive burden on your back than, in my experience, you aren’t completely comfortable with your identity as a Scentsy Consultant OR you have doubts about achieving your goals as a Scentsy Consultant. Accept who you are and the choice you made. You are a rationale person and made a decision to join for a good reason so don’t let fears about how others will perceive you deter you from your goal. You never sweat or go numb when you tell your friends, family, party guests about your favorite restaurant so take that same mentality and apply it to offering the opportunity. You are simply sharing something cool with the people you are talking with.

Second - Relax; Don't surrender to desperation.

You want them to join so badly, for whatever reason, that you start to become slimey forceful. Nobody, even the Consultant being slimey forceful, likes that - nobody wants to be that person, and surrendering to the temptation to become like this in a conversation is actually a massive turnoff to whoever you’re talking with. It’s great to have goals but don’t let an intense focus on your goal handicap the execution such that you are focused purely on the outcome You Want. Relax and be honest with yourself and whoever you’re talking with.

The reality is, the more you talk to people about becoming a Scentsy Consultant, the more appealing it is because it is more natural, casual, and unintimidating. So, avoid creating pressure-filled conversations by being honest, open and unashamed and you’ll find your conversations are much more fluid and more effective. Disconnect yourself from the outcome and focus on how much you love what you are offering and your conversations will be much more natural, unique, and actually much more effective.

Third - Share your Stories.

Your personal stories, and the stories of other Scentsy Consultants, are like underestimated jedi masters in a recruiting conversation. More impactful than every minute detail about operating a Scentsy business is your personal story. I’m not making this up, it’s actually science. Donald Calne, a well-known neurologist said -

"The essential difference between emotion and reason is that emotion leads to action, while reason leads to conclusions."

I’ve had hundreds, if not thousands of conversations with individuals about becoming a Scentsy Consultant and I’ve found that individuals seemingly starving for every possible detail about being a Scentsy Consultant are really NOT interested in joining. Nine times out of ten, they aren’t even considering it. They have negative stereotypes of direct selling and want you to reaffirm those OR in their heart of hearts they want to join and be their own boss but are too afraid so they hope your responses will feed their fears about joining Scentsy so they don’t have leave their comfort zone.

So, what kind of stories are people looking for? In particular people want to know 3 main things 1.How Scentsy has impacted your life, (Travel, Extra moola, be home with family, flexible schedule, etc.) 2. Why you joined, (student loan debt, spouse lost job, love the product, always wanted to be my own boss, etc.) and 3. What your favorite benefit is of being a Scentsy Consultant. (Cruises, Self-development, money, getting to be my kids coach, etc.)  Attach a short, concise story to each of those three, and you’re good to go. Remember, nothing will sink a great story faster than too many, unnecessary details. For whatever reason, we want to include far too many details in our stories. Remember, you’ve got 30 seconds to tell your story, keep it simple and include only what advances the core message of your story. It can even be one sentence like - “I joined Scentsy and paid off my startup costs in one month”. Or, “I took my kids to DisneyWorld with my Scentsy Income”, or “My hubs lost his job and my Scentsy income kept us afloat”, or “My husband quit his job to come work with me as a Scentsy Consultant”, or even “Scentsy pays for my monthly phone bill”. Whatever it is, the reason stories are so powerful is because people can relate to them. You can even make it more relatable by saying something like “So, if you’d love to have your phone bill paid for every month, then you ought to take a look at Scentsy”.

Following these 3 simple steps will make recruiting conversations feel much, much more natural and will, in turn, increase their effectiveness. AND you won't get that slimey, forceful feeling when you're sharing the Scentsy business opportunity. Better yet, you'll have some fun new recruits join your team and grow your Scentsy business!

Top 5 Obstacles Every Consultant Must Conquer

In the over 9 years I've been a Scentsy Consultant I've recruited over 100 amazing people to join me on this crazy, fun thing I call my Scentsy business. I'm excited and eager for every single one to really take advantage of all the great benefits of making a living as a Scentsy Consultant - flexible schedule, work where & when I want, free travel, etc - and so I jump in and try to do everything I can to help them get their new biz off the ground.

Unfortunately, it doesn't always happen. And not for the reasons you might think.

I've never seen a Consultant close the doors of their business because they didn't know what to do or how to do it. Never. 

Below are the top 5 obstacles I've seen trip up Consultants leading them to not achieve the success they envisioned when they enrolled. YOU ARE MORE AWESOME THAN YOU THINK 

I've noticed that many new Consultants feel inadequate or have a burdening self-doubt. I just want to say "You are enough. You are more than just enough. You are awesome!" Too often new Consultants bring in heavy negative baggage they’ve acquired from life that weighs them down under a belief they are not smart enough, tall enough, pretty enough, rich enough - whatever it might be - to do well as a Scentsy Consultant. You do not need to be anything more, or anything different than what you are.

Actually, once you allow yourself to tap into your OWN creativity, your OWN uniqueness and free yourself to be your type of Consultant - THEN you will find success. You, all by yourself, can figure out how to win at being a Scentsy Consultant. You have what it takes in spades to be successful. Don’t let yourself give in to the excuse that you - and anything about who you are or your unique situation and circumstances - disqualify you from success. Rather, recognize that your unique strengths, perspective, and personality are the very things that will help you be successful. Stop doubting yourself, or beating yourself up over past or current mistakes and engage your own strengths and you will be surprised just how awesome you are. Sounds cliche I know, but I've seen it over and over and over again.

FEAR

This happens with almost every single new Consultant. It is the number one reason, in my experience, that so many new Consultants give up. This quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson is so true -

Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.

Fear of failure is the most prevalent and debilitating. They say to themselves, "I don’t want to be the person that tried Scentsy and failed. If I get excited and go out and have parties, and tell everyone that I am a Scentsy consultant, talk about the business on Facebook, maybe even grow a team, and then it doesn’t work out I’m going to look like a schlumpf. All my friends will see me as a failure, I’ll feel like a failure, and they’ll tease me about that one time I tried to chase my goals as a Scentsy Consultant." I see this with SO many new Consultants. After doing this for over 9 years this is easy to recognize but the last thing new Consultants want to admit is preventing their success.

I've found the best way to address fear is to open about it. Every time I coach my team and we're making goals and tactics to achieve their goals, we always talk about any fears or skill gaps that would prevent them from doing the tactics we discussed. It is impossible to be successful as a Scentsy Consultant without overcoming fear. Nelson Mandela once said -

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.”

JUST DO IT

NOTHING can replace doing it. I’ve had hundreds of goal-making sessions, spent hours training, coaching and even roleplaying everything from how to enter parties in the workstation to how to book parties, recruit a new team member, and take care of customers. I’ve bent over backwards to make sure my team KNEW how to do everything and felt motivated to do everything they needed to do to win. But, all too often, regardless of how much they knew how to do what they needed to do - they still didn’t do it. Consultants with little or no training have awesome parties, and recruit amazing new Consultants. They just simply do it. They host parties, they talk to people about joining Scentsy, they message people about their orders, they just do it. Untrained, untouched, imperfect, yet getting it done. No amount of training or coaching will ever replace an attitude focused on simply doing it. Sometimes we let ourselves get so focused on preparation and practicing that we become paralyzed and fail to actually just go and do it.

Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.

If you're too worried and focused on preparing and practicing then your focus is driven by fear and you doubt yourself and your training at the first sign of training. The sooner you jump into improvement by practice you are focused on finding your way to success; getting better with each misstep, tailoring your approach to fit you and ultimately finding your own, unique, very YOU type of way of operating. That's when you'll hit your stride and find you're no longer forcing yourself to invite people to buy, host, or join.

MAKE GOALS

In soccer you need goals to win. Literally, if there were no goals no-one would ever win. It’s true with Scentsy as well, if you have no goals you won’t ever achieve them. And how could you? You have no measurement of success, you have no direction, no target. Say out loud what you want from your Scentsy business and write it down. Tell someone, anyone that will be an accountability partner for you, what your goal is - whether it's your Scentsy sponsor (who would love to have that convo with you!) your spouse, friend, parent, sibling, whoever, and then get to work.

Setting Goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.

If you want Scentsy to pay for a date night at least once a month, or cover a phone bill, the utilities, car, or even the mortgage - say it and write it down. Your Scentsy business can do any of these, and all of these!, but like anything, it takes work and working without a goal is like driving down the freeway just hoping you can correctly guess the exit that will take you to your destination. Pick your destination first (make goals) and then find a map (what you'll do to achieve your goal) to get you there.

BE PERSISTENT

For some reason, we want to believe that any setback is an indication that the whole thing is flawed. Too often if a new Consultant invites someone to have a party, join their team, do a fundraiser, or some other Scentsy-related activity and that person responds negatively they get deflated and give up. If you ask someone to host a party and they say no thanks. Move on. How many people did you date before you found the right one? There’s a million shows on TV yet we ignore the large majority of them and have our own few favorites. They simply don’t interest us. Scentsy isn’t for everyone, it has NOTHING to do with you and everything to do with them. It’s their choice, not yours. Allow people to be different than you and not be interested in buying, or joining WITHOUT taking it personally. A “No” is not a “You suck, I hate you”. It is what it is, someone indicating they are not interested, nothing more.

Giving up on your goals is like slashing your other three tires because you got one flat.

When you feel like you've hit a setback, don't surrender your goals so easily. Stop blaming yourself, you didn't royally screwup, give yourself the benefit of the doubt and try again...and again, and again. You can either keep trying with the aim of getting better as you go on your path to success OR consider everything that doesn't go as planned, as further evidence that becoming a Scentsy Consultant wasn't a good idea. So keep on keepin' on and giving it the ol' college try and I have no reason to believe you won't get better and find a way to make it work.

Millennials look for a different way to work, and wonder if a Scentsy business would be a good fit.  The millennial generation carries unique qualities and talents and opportunities.  A lot of those would make a millennial a great fit as a Scentsy Consultant. Often, they get a bad wrap, but there are some definite benefits to the millennial generation as Scentsy Consultants.

Who is a Millennial

First, just to make sure we're all on the same page, what makes someone a millennial? The Pew Research Center reports on data about Millennials and defines them as those born after 1980.  They are the first generation to come of age in the new millennium. Below are some general characteristics of the Millennial generation.

According to research from Goldman Sachs, the Millennial generation is the largest in history with a whopping 92 million members! That is even larger than the Baby Boomer generation coming in at 77 million and Generation X which was even lower still at 61 million.

Millennials are the first generation to grow-up in the era of rapid technological innovation.  They were born during smartphones, internet and the always-on digital world. As such, they are much more digitally connected than previous generations and use technology like texting, vlogging, messaging.  They are particularly more likely to use social media platforms to communicate.Smart Phone image

Debt generation

The Millennial generation is burdened with much more debt than previous generations. Student loan payments take up an increasing percentage of Millennial income after graduation. According to the Federal Reserve, the mean student loan balances of 25 year olds has practically doubled from just over $10,000 in 20013 to just over $20,000 in 2013.

Earning a Living

So now that we are more familiar with some of the characteristics of the Millennial generation, what do we know about what they want out of an occupation? Or really - what do they want, if anything, from the way they earn a living? There are lots of stereotypes about Millennials and lots of research about how to cater careers to Millennials.

A recent article in the Harvard Business Review stated -

Everyone gets it. Conventional wisdom holds that Millennials are entitled, easily distracted, impatient, self-absorbed, lazy, and unlikely to stay in any job for long. On the positive side, they’re also looking for purpose, feedback, and personal life balance in their work. Companies of all kinds are obsessed with understanding them better.

Actual Few Differences

The article goes on to suggest that more and more evidence is finding that there are few actual differences in Millennials and the rest of us. It continues -

While pithy descriptions of what makes Millennials unique are presented as self-evident and seem to have a ring of truth to them, very few are supported with solid empirical research. On the contrary, a growing body of evidence suggests that employees of all ages are much more alike than different in their attitudes and values at work. To the extent that any gaps do exist, they amount to small differences that have always existed between younger and older workers throughout history and have little to do with the Millennial generation per se.

The article continues to suggest that though there has been much said, studied, discussed and while stereotypes seem to abound, there just doesn't seem to be any real evidence of difference between the generations. It appears, according to this Harvard Business article, that there really is minimal differences in what the Millennial generation and the previous two (Generation X and Baby Boomers) want out of a career. The article states that -

For one, a group of researchers from George Washington University and the Department of Defense analyzed more than 20 published and unpublished studies examining generational differences and concluded that meaningful differences among generations probably do not exist in the workplace. The small differences that do appear are likely attributable to factors such as stage of life more than generational membership.

So what does this all mean? My key takeaway is that Millennials, Generation X, and Baby Boomers are looking for the same type of benefits from an occupation.  This is definitely not what I had supposed! I have done lots of research outlining the differences between Millennials and previous generations. And this article suggests that the differences are not attributable to generation, but rather life stage.

So if you are a Millennial, Generation X, or Baby Boomer, a Scentsy business could be a good fit.  A good fit is if you like the freedom to work where and when you like, enjoy free travel, spending more time with family and friends, and making good money.  If this sounds like you, then consider joining Scentsy and becoming a Scentsy Consultant.

There are so many great ways to build and grow your Scentsy Business, and one that is very powerful is to use social media outlets, including YouTube.  It is such a great tool, and can help grow your Scentsy business.  YouTube videos are also helpful to allow your business to continue to grow and reach outside your circle.

YouTube Tips to grow your Scentsy business:

Link in video description

Make sure you list your Scentsy website in the descriptions of your videos.  That way, anyone can easily buy products directly or join your Scentsy team while they watch your YouTube video.

Use keywords

Give your Scentsy YouTube videos a good keyword specific name, so Google can find your Scentsy videos, and those searching on YouTube can find your relevant videos too.

Pin the video to Pinterest

When you make a Scentsy video, pin it on your Scentsy Pinterest board to make that link stronger (Google likes that).  That also increase your chances for being seen when someone searches for Scentsy information.

Create Playlists

Create YouTube Scentsy playlists and make videos along different topics.  You could show Scentsy products in real life, and your quick review of a Scentsy product, explain how to use the product.  Other helpful videos could be information to help your team, or tips for other consultants. Another idea is to share how Scentsy blesses your life or works into your life. 

Really, you can talk about anything you want to share about Scentsy!  Your simple tips can help another consultant, and help boost your business too. 

Keep videos short

Keep your Scentsy videos short (5-15 minutes) and people will be a lot more likely to watch them. It's better to make MORE videos specific to one thing, than fewer videos that are longer in duration.  Remember, you don't have to explain all of the things at once, take them one step at a time in each video.

You don't have to look perfect to make a Scentsy video on YouTube, it should be a reflection of your unique personality.  The more they can get to know you and recognize your personal brand, the more you'll grow.  One side note is to be you, but make sure you're a bit professional as well.  For instance, don't use offensive words or wear immodest clothing, etc.  

Smile

The most important thing is your SMILE!!  Be positive, happy, and upbeat and others will be drawn to you.  They will want to buy the Scentsy you recommend, will want to host a party with you, or even join your Scentsy team, thanks to your Scentsy videos on YouTube!

How to Change Scentsy Wax

Scentsy Wax Melts, doesn't burn

Scentsy wickless candles are safe because they don't have a flame, and also no fire.  That means the wax does not burn when you turn on your Scentsy warmer, but it melts.  The specially formulated fragrance wax melts at a low temperature, releasing only the Scentsy scent into your home.

When to Change Scentsy Wax

Since Scentsy wax does not burn, it will not disappear in the warmer as a traditional candle would do as it burns.  That's a good thing, since that means the wax and soot are not getting on your walls, in your air ducts, or in your lungs.  It might be hard to know when to change it, if you are waiting for the wax to diminish before you change out your Scentsy wax though!

So, here's the tip:  change it when you can't smell the Scentsy fragrance as strongly as you want.

How to Change Scentsy Wax

There are a few easy ways to change your Scentsy wax in your warmer:

1.  Turn off warmer, allow Scentsy wax to harden.  Then, turn on Scentsy warmer for a minute until the edge gets soft and lift the wax disc out.

2.  Pick up dish (from full size warmer only) while wax is melted and pour out wax into disposable container.  Wipe out dish with a paper towel.

3.  Place a few cotton balls or a paper towel in the warm wax to soak it up, then discard and wipe out dish.
