People often want to know all about selling Scentsy as an independent consultant before they join, so let's talk about the top 5 things you might want to know. Scentsy is a leading brand of wickless candles and fragrance products, sold by independent consultants all over the world. 

Potential consultants often want to know about the business model.  This includes questions like how they can earn money, the commission structure, and the costs associated with joining and maintaining their Scentsy business. They might also inquire about the support provided by the company to help them succeed.

While the specific questions can vary, here are five frequently asked questions that potential Scentsy consultants have:

1. How Does Selling Scentsy and the Business Model Work?

Scentsy is a Direct Sales business model. Consultants sign up to sell the products, and lead a team of other consultants if they choose.  Consultants earn commissions on every product they sell, whether those products are sold to customers or for their own personal use.   Leaders who grow and lead a team can also earn Leadership Bonuses in addition to personal sales commissions.

2. What Products Would I Be Selling?

 People interested in selling Scentsy might want to know more about the products they would be selling, such as wax melts, warmers, diffusers, essential oils, and other fragrance-related items. They may also ask about the quality of the products and how to sell them effectively.

At Scentsy, we have all sorts of fragrance products to scent your space.  That includes home fragrance, laundry, cleaning, bath and body products, kids scented stuffies, and even fragrance products for your vehicle.  We have a partnership with Disney and other licensing agencies like NFL, to bring exclusive co-branded products as well. 

Scentsy quality is second to none.  Some potential consultants worry about seeing similar products in competitor stores, but I have never had a customer leave and not come back for our superior quality. Scentsy's warranties are incredible as well, which customers really appreciate. 

3. What Are Startup Costs and Requirements to Selling Scentsy?

This is a common question among potential consultants. They want to understand the initial investment required to join Scentsy, including the cost of the Scentsy starter kits, marketing materials, and any ongoing fees. They might also ask about any specific qualifications or commitments needed to get started.

In the US, it's $99 to join plus shipping and local sales tax.  That fee includes access to the workstation, your own personalized website for 3 months, and a starter kit full of everything you need to get started.  There are no other fees to keep your account open, only $15 per month for your website if you choose to keep that. 

When I started selling Scentsy, I wanted to make enough money to cover my startup costs in the first month.  That way I wouldn't have a big commitment, and could quit if I didn't like it.  I am still here as a consultant, 15 years later, so I would say it worked out.  

4. Can I Sell Scentsy Part-Time?

Many individuals considering Scentsy are interested in a part-time venture alongside their existing job or commitments. They may inquire about the flexibility of the business, the time commitment required to achieve success, and whether it's possible to balance Scentsy with other responsibilities.

The answer to this one is easy:  yes!  One of my favorite things about Scentsy is how I can create my own schedule to work whenever and wherever it works for me.  When my kids were little, I worked during naptime and after I put them to bed.  You can definitely work Scentsy part time.

Potential consultants often want to know about the training resources available to help them learn about the products, sales techniques, and business strategies. Scentsy partyThe best way to really get your new Scentsy business off the ground is to make some money right at the start. If you decide to get your new business up and running, you really could make $500 in your first month as a Scentsy Consultant. 

Let's talk about first Why would that be important to start so strong, and then how to make it happen. 

WHY is it important to start strong?

You really can make your Scentsy business what you want of it, and there's no pressure from me or Scentsy to do anything.  However, if you really want to be successful with your new business, a good start is important. 

Pay off Starter Costs

First, there's no better satisfaction than paying off your Scentsy Consultant business startup costs - everything after that is profit! It helps to minimize the startup risks too; if you decide to quit, you won't have debts to repay.  And secondly, money is a great motivator and convincer.

I have a Scentsy Consultant friend whose husband was a little less than supportive. Not a hater, just not very enthusiastic about his wife's new business. Well, long story short he saw a surround sound stereo system he wanted and his wife said she'd buy it for him with her Scentsy income the next month. Earning money really gets some wind in your sails, so make a goal to earn enough money to pay for something significant to you - a phone bill, cover a date night or two, a car payment, or even a mortgage - whatever it is, make it relevant to you. The nice thing about being a Scentsy Consultant is that it's pretty straight forward how to earn money.

Start with a Goal

Make a goal of how much you'd like to earn and it's pretty simple to figure out how you can earn that money. I started with a $500 goal. I chose $500 because it's a great chunk of change that's high enough to impact your budget, but that doesn't take a massive time to earn.

Map Out Your Goal

You can always shoot for more, but I think a check for $500* is a great place to start. You can pay off your starter kit cost with part of that ($100), then still make $400 profit to keep.  A $500 paycheck would require $2,000 PRV in sales (earning 25% commission).  So, following the math, that's only 4 parties of $500 each.

You get to choose how you like to grow your Scentsy business.  Your determination and creativity are your greatest assets so don't give up on yourself before you've really given it a good try.

When you begin your Scentsy Consultant career you are able to tap into 1 of the 10 ways you can earn money as a Scentsy Consultant and only 2 of those have to do with your own sales. All of the remaining levels reflect how well you do at growing your team and helping them take care of their customers and grow their own teams! So the fastest way to really grow your income is to keep growing your customer base, while growing and leading a team of Scentsy Consultants, to help them rock their own businesses.

Launching a Scentsy business can be kind of a crazy experience. I mean, you just started your own business! You are finally your own boss! But that coin has two sides - not only are you your own boss, but now it all depends on you! That thought can be very scary. 

Okay, pause, before you get sweaty palms, sit - let’s break it down.

You Can Do It

First, seriously you got this. Really, I don’t doubt you can rock this. Know this, 1 great party or 2 good parties and you’ve paid off your startup costs. How cool is that? Everything after that is icing on the cake!

Seriously, anyone that can turn on a Scentsy Warmer is capable of earning back the $99 you paid to launch your new biz. 🙂 It’s not rocket science it’s largely persistence and determination. We’ve been doing this since 2008 and we've seen dozens if not hundreds of people join Scentsy - some rock - others roll. The greatest difference between them is whether or not they stick with it. It’s really all in your hands.

Start Strong

If you’re considering joining Scentsy and becoming a Scentsy Consultant, there are some amazing incentives that can ONLY be earned in your first 15 or 70 days as a Scentsy Consultant. Once those days pass they’re gone, you can’t earn them any more.

Shooting Star Award

One of the incentives is called the Shooting Star Award. Basically you sell 500 in PRV (approx. $500 USD) in your first 15 days.  You are then eligible to purchase a kit of Scentsy products at an amazing price. 

This helps you have products to be able to demo at a party, fair, show, Facebook party, or however you want to use them! And that’s great, but in my opinion there is a far better incentive to focus on to really get your Scentsy business off to an awesome start.

Scentsational Start Program

Earning the Shooting Star Award puts you on a good path to earn the Scentsational Start Awards too.  You didn’t ask but I’ll tell you - the single greatest way to launch your business is to take advantage of the Scentsational Start Program. Why?

Scentsy has shared the results of research they’ve done that indicates that those who earn Scentsational Start go on to become Directors. Not only that but earning Scentsational Start gives you product credit, an exclusive warmer, recognition at Scentsy Family Reunion, oh, and did I mention product credit?!

Level 1 starts with $50 in product credit and that goes up to $225 at Level 3, how awesome is that!?

Three Levels to Earn

There are three levels of Scentsational Start and each level can be earned in two different ways. One way is entirely through sales and the other is a combo of sales and recruiting. I’d encourage you to go with the combo just because that puts you in a great position to grow your team and helps you develop habits that give you a foundation for long-term success. After all, you’ve got your sights set on earning a free trip right?! Life as a Scentsy Consultant has taken us to places like Greece, New York, the Dominican Republic, Cancun, Nashville, and more - for free. I have yet to meet someone who hates free travel. 🙂

Level 1

Now, let’s take a quick walk through it. The chart above is pretty self-explanatory but let me add some details. First, notice that if you earn Scentsational Start Level 1 through sales you have also earned the Shooting Star Kit AND promoted to Certified Consultant AND entirely paid off your startup costs AND earned an automatic, permanent pay raise (you go from earning 20% to 25% on your sales). Not bad! Not bad a’tall! 😉

Level 2

Now let’s look at Scentsational Start Level 2. If you earn Level 2 (either method - the sales or the combo) you’ve done all the same things as Level 1 but if you earn it through the combo method (in 1 month) you’ve double promoted to a Lead Consultant and now tap into 3 of the 10 ways you can get paid as a Scentsy Consultant! In addition to the awesome start you have and the glorious commission check that awaits you, you’ll also be awarded $125 in FREE product credit! That’s more than double the amount awarded for Level 1!

Level 3

Now, Scentsational Start Level 3. This is by far the Super Supremest way to launch your new Scentsy business! To earn this level you’ve got 70 days to sell 6,000 in PRV - that’s a lot, not undoable but again I’m going to steer you towards the combo method - 3,000 in PRV and 2 Active Consultants. Active means that your new teammates need to sell 200 in PRV (approx. $200 USD) in your first 70 days. Both methods are great but if you earn it with the combo method you are a Star Consultant! That means you’ve moved from Essential to Certified to Lead and finally Star and you’re tapping into 4 of the 10 ways you can make money as a Scentsy Consultant! And, bonus - you’ve just earned $225 in product credit!

So, it is a lot of work but it’s by no means out of reach.  If you’re going to launch your biz might as well go big or go home.  This helps you really get set up to promote to Director AND you get FREE product credit!

3 Vision Challenges Scentsy Leaders Face

The Three Vision Challenges Direct Selling Leaders Face

Becoming a Leader as a Scentsy Consultant can be intimidating. We’ve even had dozens of Consultants on our team that avoid being a leader! They contrast their perception of what it means to be leader with their own perceived weaknesses and insecurities and get overwhelmed with the gap they see between the two. I’m not going to say it’s easy or that these fears aren’t real but in my experience too many of us shrink in the face of our own, very real potential. In reality, none of us really know what we’re doing. Everybody who is a leader was once not a leader. Every current leaders had a first time being a leader. Our own experience and a willingness to tackle uncertainty goes a long way! A lot of times you just have to fake it ’til you make it! Trust in your own experience, jump in, keep working your business, realize you don’t have to know everything and in most cases, you’ll do awesome.

That said as leaders we want to help our team grow their own Scentsy businesses and striking a balance between working our own business and helping our teams can become a confusing exercise with mixed results. We want to help but aren’t sure what our teams need, what is most helpful, or if they even want our help. We’ve spent hours and hours helping, mentoring, training,  and coaching Scentsy Consultants on our team grow their own business with at best, mixed results. This leads to what we’ve determined is the most universal challenge we think all leaders face, ourselves included, is a matter of vision. These three issues with Vision influence how we spend our time as leaders and heavily impact our team growth.

These three Vision problems are:

  1. We have no positive vision of the new Consultants that join our team.
  2. We have too much vision for the new Consultant that join our team.
  3. We have no positive vision of ourselves.

So, the first one - having no positive vision of our new Consultants. This is pretty self-explanatory but more importantly how does someone get to that point? How do we get to a point where we have not positive vision of our new Consultants potential? There may be people that are just naturally pessimistic and don’t see other’s potential BUT in my experience our natural tendency is to see others in a better light than ourselves. And THAT, ironically, is how we get ourselves get to a point where we don’t see any hope for our new Consultants.

You see, imagine you’re a new leader wanting to help your team achieve their goals so you spend hours training, attending launch parties, explaining the comp plan, and even help them overcome their fears and get that first recruit. They promote to Lead. You have hope for their future and your own as you see your new Lead Consultant walking across the stage as a Director! A couple of phone calls go by and your new Lead is having a tough time completing goals, she’s not hitting her numbers, and her new recruit isn’t doing much. You paint the picture you see of her but it falls on deaf ears, nothing changes and other things begin to take precedence for your Lead Consultant. Two months go by and your unanswered phone messages, PM’s, and texts warning her that she is on the termination list do nothing and she’s gone.

Well, gee, thanks for the depressing story right?! But that’s how we get there. We get burned again, and again, and again. We invest time and energy and become emotionally attached to people and the amazing future we know they can achieve. So after watching that potential crumble with dozens of new Consultants after spending so much energy on them, we get deflated. The reality of direct sales is that one-third of our teams are just starting their biz, another one-third is working it, and the last one-third are on their way out.

How do we address this?

So, I’ve typed this sentence a dozen times but there really is no way to say it without sounding harsh but we have to find a way to provide some custom guidance, point them in the right direction and let them go and do it on their own. It's hard, but avoid the well-intentioned tendency to push or pull your new Consultants to success. You will be able to drag some to promotions but when you ask them to step up as leaders they won't know what that means or they'll think they need to do what you did and get frustrated trying to pull their teams to success. Instead of pushing or pulling, we focus on partnering. We increase our availability and mentoring to match their level of achievement. Sounds harsh but the more we push and pull the less they have to tap into their own creativity and feel the drive to do anything to make it work. No amount of mentoring or coaching can match the power of their own motivation.

Now the second one, the opposite of the first, is having too much vision for our new Consultants. Why is this a challenge? Well, because we do what I explained above - we spend inordinate amounts of time, energy, and emotional investment and set ourselves up for frustration as we see Consultants CHOOSE to let their Scentsy business die.

How do we address this?

Well, as odd it may seem the answer here is the same as the answer to the first - find a balanced approach to provide your new Consultants what they need. I’ll be honest though, it’s still a bummer watching people with so much potential not make it work. But, but that’s their choice and I respect that and wish them the best.

Finally, the one Vision issue we don’t think we have but is the greatest threat to our business - having no positive vision of ourselves. This Vision issue is what keeps so many Consultants from even being a Leader! How do we get to where we don’t have a positive vision of ourselves? Well, nobody knows us better than ourselves. We minimize or even forget our successes and exaggerate our failures. We think we can trust ourselves to be objective about our success rate when in reality we are own worst critics. No one is harder on us than ourselves as we spend hours comparing ourselves to others which only magnifies our weaknesses. All the while blind to the fact that they are doing the same as they look at us.

How do we address this?

Winston Churchill is quoted as saying - “Success is going from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm”. Success is not the absence of failure. My favorite BBQ sauce is Heinz 57 - it took 57 attempts to find the perfect recipe to find the awesomest BBQ sauce ever so hey, we can screw up from time to time. Secondly, stop comparing. The other day as I was at Costco filling up my car with gasoline. While I filled up, I overheard a conversation the woman in front of me was having on her phone. She was telling the person on the other end that their mutual friend was making a huge mistake; she was signing up for one of those "awful pyramid schemes”.

She continued her conversation saying things like:

Direct Selling Perception

I couldn’t believe just how much hatred this woman had for direct selling. Honestly, I didn’t think there were still people in the world that held that perception of direct selling. I'm not naive enough to think that everyone loves direct selling, but I was surprised at just how belligerent she was towards it. But I like to think that this woman is really just a victim of misinformation. She has never had the opportunity to actually get to know people working direct sales, and see their success.

Real Success

The reality is that 20 million people are involved in the $36.12 billion direct selling industry.  People involved in direct selling have a higher percentage of annual income over $50,000 when compared to all Americans. (58% vs. 50%)

Contrary to opinion, direct sellers also have a higher level of average education than the average American:  52% of are college graduates compared to 28% and 99% have high school diplomas compared to 85%.

Now, let’s talk about the rewards of being a Scentsy Consultant or direct seller. First, as in any business to look exclusively at the money would be limiting and not indicative of the real reasons people choose direct selling.

For example, when I applied for corporate jobs I always asked about things like healthcare, 401k, paid time off, culture, and work-life balance.  All of these were factors when I considered the job. Salary is just one thing to consider. Beyond income, research indicates that individuals enjoy the fringe benefits like the flexibility of being their own bosses.  We get to set our own hours and schedule, as well as ever having to ask for time off!

Income from Sales

When you talk about income as a Scentsy Consultant (or any direct sales) you have to remember that first, direct selling is, well, still selling. We make a commission from the sales we make.  As much as we talk about the other activities we spend the majority of our time doing like mentoring and recruiting, we still sell.  In Scentsy, we have to sell a certain amount to get paid on the production of our team.

Secondly, Scentsy Consultants are paid monthly and every month is different. We don't receive a set salary, or any guaranteed amount.  For instance, some months - like October and November - are huge sales months with consumers gearing up for the holidays.  Those months, the money you make as a Scentsy Consultant will more likely be higher than other months.  Commissions income is dependent on your own sales, so you do have control over your paycheck. You can work to make the amount you want, or to make consistent checks, but it will most likely vary naturally.

Thirdly, there is a large percentage of Consultants who join a direct selling company to buy their favorite products at a discount, NOT to make a living off it. And since individuals are paid based on their work and level of effort and time dedicated to their business, those who are working it like a part-time job earn a part-time income. It's important to remember that is exactly what they want out of it. 

Direct Sales Average Income

The first data I found went back to 2011 when Amy Robinson, a spokesperson for the Direct Selling Association, said that the median annual income for direct sales consultants in 2011 was $2,400. As I dug further I found that research done by Harris Poll in 2014 provided some more up to date information. According to the research -

Doing some simple math, that means that 2.4 million direct sellers earned more than $50,000 based on 2014 figures. The article points out that beats the national average salary for men and women.  It also is more than the national median annual salary for all Americans working a 40-hour workweek as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Dec. 2013.

Now, that’s only 15% of those involved in direct selling, but that’s also about the percentage of consultants actually working their business. The research indicates that 70% of Consultants spend less than 15 hours/week on their business. An important note to add here is that those 15% earning that $50,000 and up are doing it how, when, and where they want to.

Can I make money with Scentsy?

In summary, can you make money in direct selling?

The answer is of course, yes. The most important things to remember are;

If benefits like a flexible schedule, more time with family, being your own boss, and setting your own hours are appealing to you, then you would be an awesome Scentsy consultant.  As long as you are comfortable as an entrepreneur with risk and have a good work ethic, then it sounds like it’s a great fit for you. If not, and you prefer punching in and out for a guaranteed paycheck, then this might not be your ideal way to make money.

5 Keys to Rocking Sales as a Scentsy Consultant

Here are our five tips on how to rock your Scentsy sales and grow your customer base to ensure business success.  As much as we talk about recruiting new individuals to join Scentsy and become Consultants on your team, it's imperative you get comfortable selling Scentsy as well.

1. Make a Scentsy Sales Goal

Goals give you direction. The top achievers across all fields from athletes, to successful business-owners use goals to direct their focus and measure their progress. Having a target helps narrow your focus and so you can identify what it will take to hit your target. Everyone, including you, started your Scentsy business with a hope of something - whether it was simply to be able to buy the products at a discount or to earn free travel, extra money, or to make it their main source of income; identify what that is for you and make goals to get you there. One of the saddest things for us as top Scentsy sponsors is when we’ve had to watch visionary, capable, high-potential individuals give up on their Scentsy business because they never used goals to chase their initial dreams.

This includes making a daily plan of specifics that you will do every day to achieve your goals. Whether it’s to send out an email, or PM you best customers, or text locals - whatever it is, break down your big monthly goal into bite-size daily ones that you can own and that will get you to your big goal. Don’t allow yourself to surrender your goal to speed bumps or roadblocks that might come up. You’ll get discouraged and experience some rejection and disappointment so be stubborn with your goal, don’t give up when your efforts don’t yield what you were hoping.

2. Diversify How You Sell Scentsy

We all have our favorite way of doing things AND our favorite ways of not doing some things and avoiding things that intimidate us. Now, obviously, leverage what you know and what you’re good at but don’t run away from other methods of getting additional sales. Try something new. If you’ve never done a home party, try one. You’ll be surprised, they’re more fun and easy than you’d think. If you’ve never done a fb party, a fundraiser, basket party, fair and show, - try it. Or, even better, think of your own unique way of getting sales.

In the world of retail they talk about the three ways to get more sales - get more customers, get them to buy from you more often, and increase the average amount they spend with you. When you joined Scentsy and became a Scentsy Consultant, you became your own sales channel so examine your relationship with your customers and determine in which of those three areas you can grow your sales. There are so many unique, different ways to grow your sales, it’s worth it to diversify your approach.

3. Follow-up With Your Scentsy Customers 

It’s age-old marketing wisdom that it costs more to acquire a new customer than it does to simply take care of existing customers and help them be your best customers and source of consistent sales. In my experience, when I’ve contacted my Scentsy customers to make them aware of sales, specials, promotions, BBMB, 10% off, Scent of the Month or just to see if they wanted to get a fresh batch of new scents in the 6 pack; they appreciated being made aware of it and felt like I was doing them a service. Rarely did they express irritation that I was making them aware of our specials. Done with the right mindset and in the spirit of taking care of a Scentsy customer, well-done follow-up can become a thriving source of sales for you every month.

As a Scentsy Consultant, remember to keep your follow-up focused and simple with a clear call-to-action and make it easy to do it. For example, if you send out a text to your VIP customers be sure you tell them why you’re texting them (It’s 10% off month! Your favorite Scentsy scents are now only $3.75 vs. $5.00 when bought in a 6pack!) and make it easy for them to take advantage of why you texted them like including a link to your PWS in the text. Take care of your Scentsy customers by letting them know when relevant specials, new products, or discounts are available and they’ll appreciate it and you’ll be able to increase your sales!

4. Ditch Distractions

Take a diet from your distractions, particularly the communication distractions - emails. Facebook. Twitter. Instagram, whatever they are. Don’t let yourself get trapped in the busy-ness of responding to every like, reply, PM, retweet, or email urgently. The constant looking down and refreshing of the various social feeds on our phones suck our focus and energy and cripple our ability to make consistent, solid progress. With your goals made and a daily plan in place, prioritize getting those done without the ever-shiney object of social media squirreling you away from your goals that you really want to ensure get done.

Sometimes, and this may be you, but sometimes we check our phones not because we’re really eager to see an update as much we want to avoid something we fear, or feel uncomfortable doing. That’s another reason this is on the list and speaks to our last tip - put down the distractions and get ‘er done. Feel free to implement a reward system - once I get orders totalling 200 PRV than I'll check fb for 5 minutes. Now, though it might sound like it, I’m not suggesting you become good friends with a volleyball and live on a deserted island. This is prioritizing getting your results above things that can wait.

5. Do it.

These tips are well and good but if we don’t get over ourselves and do it, nothing happens. I’ve seen lots of Consultants make goals and express determination to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals only to see them surrender to procrastination, fear, distractions, and poor time management. Don’t let yourself be the greatest obstacle to your Scentsy success. I’ve heard every rationale as to why goals didn’t happen but at the end of the day, in most cases, it’s a matter of fear or skills. Sometimes Scentsy Consultants become afraid of being public as a direct seller, because they aren’t comfortable in their own skin as a Consultant and are anxious about having labels attached them that sometimes accompany direct selling.

Other times, it’s a fear of failure, it can be nerve-wracking to put yourself out there to achieve a goal and not be successful. But really, do any of us mock the hundreds of Olympic athletes that don’t leave with a medal? Of course not. If it’s not fear, then it’s a skill gap, you simply don’t feel like you know how to have a home party, or do a fundraiser, etc. Regardless, whether it’s fear or skills, there’s a million amazing training videos in the workstation and a massive amount of expertise in my Scentsy group that would be happy to help. But, at the end of the day, nobody but you can make the calls, have the party, send the texts, or etc. It’s all entirely in your hands, just do it. 

You can have success with your Scentsy sales.  There are always customers wanting to buy, sometimes you just have to find them.  Use these 5 keys to rocking sales as a Scentsy consultant, and you'll find success in no time.

Is Scentsy a Pyramid Scheme?

Every now and then I tell people how my husband and I support* our family with our Direct Sales business. Inevitably the conversation leads to this question, “Oh, so it’s like a pyramid scheme?”.

No, Scentsy is not a pyramid scheme. After a while, I began to wonder what exactly is a pyramid scheme. Why do so many people consider any direct selling business to be one?

What Is a Pyramid Scheme

So first, what is a pyramid scheme? When in doubt, turn to Wikipedia! 🙂 –

Pyramid schemes—also referred to as franchise fraud or chain referral schemes—are marketing and investment frauds in which an individual is offered a distributorship or franchise to market a particular product. Participants earn the real profit, not by the sale of the product, but by the sale of new distributorships. Emphasis on selling franchises rather than the product eventually leads to a point where the supply of potential investors is exhausted and the pyramid collapses.”

Often, the term pyramid scheme is associated with direct selling businesses.  However, it actually happens just as much if not more often in the financial sector.

Pyramid Scheme 101

Examples 

I did a Google search for the term pyramid scheme. The first result was an article about a Montana woman.  She pleaded guilty to using money from new investors to make payments to earlier investors, between 2008 and 2016. The article states that "she's accused of taking $1.5 million from 28 different people. At least four of the investors were identified as vulnerable persons because of their age, and one was mentally disabled." 

That type of "business" is bad, and should get a bad wrap.  It's also illegal (with good reason).

How to Know if a Business Is Legitimate

Below is a video from the Direct Selling Association in Australia called "Understanding Illegal Pyramid Schemes".  The video outlines they key points of how to identify whether a business is a legitimate direct selling business or a pyramid scheme.

MLM organizations

Specifically with regards to Multi-level marketing organizations the same Wikipedia page states –

According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission legitimate MLM, unlike pyramid schemes:

"...have a real product to sell. More importantly, MLM's actually sell their product to members of the general public, without requiring these consumers to pay anything extra or to join the MLM system. MLM's may pay commissions to a long string of distributors, but these commission are paid for real retail sales, not for new recruits."

Selling of Goods is Key

In summary, any business model in which members make money from the signup fee of someone else rather than any actual selling of goods or services is a pyramid scheme. Additionally, in exchange, the organization promises its new members a share of the money taken from every additional member that they recruit. If a percentage of your sign up fee goes directly to those who enrolled you, or if you are a member of a business that rewards you financially when someone joins under you – then you are part of a pyramid scheme.

Pyramid Scheme Promises

Pyramid Schemes come in all shapes and sizes but all make massive promises.  Generally speaking, these schemes also leave their members, except the few at the top, worse off. This same Wiki page tells of about a dozen notable pyramid schemes all over the world.  These businesses have caused riots and robbed thousands, if not millions, of people lots of money.

Pyramid schemes are illegal ploys to rob people.  They promise an income to convince more and more people to pay the enrollment fee, of which they get a portion.

Structured to Defraud

In a Forbes magazine article by Nancy Collamer, she clarifies that “MLM’s are sometimes erroneously referred to as “pyramid schemes” – companies structured with the intent of defrauding the public”. These organizations are designed to make money, but NOT generated by the sale of any product or service. Money is made when individuals pay an enrollment fee - to a small group or individual at the top and are illegal.

Is Scentsy a Pyramid?

In Scentsy, I do get potential leadership bonuses from the amount my team sells. However, I don't get a sign-up fee when they join.  I am paid for helping new team members join and start a successful business, selling actual products.
