In some ways, it's harder, since a Direct Sales business owner has to find ways to stay motivated and moving forward, without accountability to a boss.

Top 5 Obstacles Every Consultant Must Conquer

In the over 9 years I've been a Scentsy Consultant I've recruited over 100 amazing people to join me on this crazy, fun thing I call my Scentsy business. I'm excited and eager for every single one to really take advantage of all the great benefits of making a living as a Scentsy Consultant - flexible schedule, work where & when I want, free travel, etc - and so I jump in and try to do everything I can to help them get their new biz off the ground.

Unfortunately, it doesn't always happen. And not for the reasons you might think.

I've never seen a Consultant close the doors of their business because they didn't know what to do or how to do it. Never. 

Below are the top 5 obstacles I've seen trip up Consultants leading them to not achieve the success they envisioned when they enrolled. YOU ARE MORE AWESOME THAN YOU THINK 

I've noticed that many new Consultants feel inadequate or have a burdening self-doubt. I just want to say "You are enough. You are more than just enough. You are awesome!" Too often new Consultants bring in heavy negative baggage they’ve acquired from life that weighs them down under a belief they are not smart enough, tall enough, pretty enough, rich enough - whatever it might be - to do well as a Scentsy Consultant. You do not need to be anything more, or anything different than what you are.

Actually, once you allow yourself to tap into your OWN creativity, your OWN uniqueness and free yourself to be your type of Consultant - THEN you will find success. You, all by yourself, can figure out how to win at being a Scentsy Consultant. You have what it takes in spades to be successful. Don’t let yourself give in to the excuse that you - and anything about who you are or your unique situation and circumstances - disqualify you from success. Rather, recognize that your unique strengths, perspective, and personality are the very things that will help you be successful. Stop doubting yourself, or beating yourself up over past or current mistakes and engage your own strengths and you will be surprised just how awesome you are. Sounds cliche I know, but I've seen it over and over and over again.

FEAR

This happens with almost every single new Consultant. It is the number one reason, in my experience, that so many new Consultants give up. This quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson is so true -

Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.

Fear of failure is the most prevalent and debilitating. They say to themselves, "I don’t want to be the person that tried Scentsy and failed. If I get excited and go out and have parties, and tell everyone that I am a Scentsy consultant, talk about the business on Facebook, maybe even grow a team, and then it doesn’t work out I’m going to look like a schlumpf. All my friends will see me as a failure, I’ll feel like a failure, and they’ll tease me about that one time I tried to chase my goals as a Scentsy Consultant." I see this with SO many new Consultants. After doing this for over 9 years this is easy to recognize but the last thing new Consultants want to admit is preventing their success.

I've found the best way to address fear is to open about it. Every time I coach my team and we're making goals and tactics to achieve their goals, we always talk about any fears or skill gaps that would prevent them from doing the tactics we discussed. It is impossible to be successful as a Scentsy Consultant without overcoming fear. Nelson Mandela once said -

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.”

JUST DO IT

NOTHING can replace doing it. I’ve had hundreds of goal-making sessions, spent hours training, coaching and even roleplaying everything from how to enter parties in the workstation to how to book parties, recruit a new team member, and take care of customers. I’ve bent over backwards to make sure my team KNEW how to do everything and felt motivated to do everything they needed to do to win. But, all too often, regardless of how much they knew how to do what they needed to do - they still didn’t do it. Consultants with little or no training have awesome parties, and recruit amazing new Consultants. They just simply do it. They host parties, they talk to people about joining Scentsy, they message people about their orders, they just do it. Untrained, untouched, imperfect, yet getting it done. No amount of training or coaching will ever replace an attitude focused on simply doing it. Sometimes we let ourselves get so focused on preparation and practicing that we become paralyzed and fail to actually just go and do it.

Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.

If you're too worried and focused on preparing and practicing then your focus is driven by fear and you doubt yourself and your training at the first sign of training. The sooner you jump into improvement by practice you are focused on finding your way to success; getting better with each misstep, tailoring your approach to fit you and ultimately finding your own, unique, very YOU type of way of operating. That's when you'll hit your stride and find you're no longer forcing yourself to invite people to buy, host, or join.

MAKE GOALS

In soccer you need goals to win. Literally, if there were no goals no-one would ever win. It’s true with Scentsy as well, if you have no goals you won’t ever achieve them. And how could you? You have no measurement of success, you have no direction, no target. Say out loud what you want from your Scentsy business and write it down. Tell someone, anyone that will be an accountability partner for you, what your goal is - whether it's your Scentsy sponsor (who would love to have that convo with you!) your spouse, friend, parent, sibling, whoever, and then get to work.

If you want Scentsy to pay for a date night at least once a month, or cover a phone bill, the utilities, car, or even the mortgage - say it and write it down. Your Scentsy business can do any of these, and all of these!, but like anything, it takes work and working without a goal is like driving down the freeway just hoping you can correctly guess the exit that will take you to your destination. Pick your destination first (make goals) and then find a map (what you'll do to achieve your goal) to get you there.

BE PERSISTENT

For some reason, we want to believe that any setback is an indication that the whole thing is flawed. Too often if a new Consultant invites someone to have a party, join their team, do a fundraiser, or some other Scentsy-related activity and that person responds negatively they get deflated and give up. If you ask someone to host a party and they say no thanks. Move on. How many people did you date before you found the right one? There’s a million shows on TV yet we ignore the large majority of them and have our own few favorites. They simply don’t interest us. Scentsy isn’t for everyone, it has NOTHING to do with you and everything to do with them. It’s their choice, not yours. Allow people to be different than you and not be interested in buying, or joining WITHOUT taking it personally. A “No” is not a “You suck, I hate you”. It is what it is, someone indicating they are not interested, nothing more.

Giving up on your goals is like slashing your other three tires because you got one flat.

When you feel like you've hit a setback, don't surrender your goals so easily. Stop blaming yourself, you didn't royally screwup, give yourself the benefit of the doubt and try again...and again, and again. You can either keep trying with the aim of getting better as you go on your path to success OR consider everything that doesn't go as planned, as further evidence that becoming a Scentsy Consultant wasn't a good idea. So keep on keepin' on and giving it the ol' college try and I have no reason to believe you won't get better and find a way to make it work.

Is Scentsy a Good Fit for Millennials?

Millennials look for a different way to work, and wonder if a Scentsy business would be a good fit.  The millennial generation carries unique qualities and talents and opportunities.  A lot of those would make a millennial a great fit as a Scentsy Consultant. Often, they get a bad wrap, but there are some definite benefits to the millennial generation as Scentsy Consultants.

Who is a Millennial

First, just to make sure we're all on the same page, what makes someone a millennial? The Pew Research Center reports on data about Millennials and defines them as those born after 1980.  They are the first generation to come of age in the new millennium. Below are some general characteristics of the Millennial generation.

According to research from Goldman Sachs, the Millennial generation is the largest in history with a whopping 92 million members! That is even larger than the Baby Boomer generation coming in at 77 million and Generation X which was even lower still at 61 million.

Millennials are the first generation to grow-up in the era of rapid technological innovation.  They were born during smartphones, internet and the always-on digital world. As such, they are much more digitally connected than previous generations and use technology like texting, vlogging, messaging.  They are particularly more likely to use social media platforms to communicate.Smart Phone image

Debt generation

The Millennial generation is burdened with much more debt than previous generations. Student loan payments take up an increasing percentage of Millennial income after graduation. According to the Federal Reserve, the mean student loan balances of 25 year olds has practically doubled from just over $10,000 in 20013 to just over $20,000 in 2013.

Earning a Living

So now that we are more familiar with some of the characteristics of the Millennial generation, what do we know about what they want out of an occupation? Or really - what do they want, if anything, from the way they earn a living? There are lots of stereotypes about Millennials and lots of research about how to cater careers to Millennials.

A recent article in the Harvard Business Review stated -

Everyone gets it. Conventional wisdom holds that Millennials are entitled, easily distracted, impatient, self-absorbed, lazy, and unlikely to stay in any job for long. On the positive side, they’re also looking for purpose, feedback, and personal life balance in their work. Companies of all kinds are obsessed with understanding them better.

Actual Few Differences

The article goes on to suggest that more and more evidence is finding that there are few actual differences in Millennials and the rest of us. It continues -

While pithy descriptions of what makes Millennials unique are presented as self-evident and seem to have a ring of truth to them, very few are supported with solid empirical research. On the contrary, a growing body of evidence suggests that employees of all ages are much more alike than different in their attitudes and values at work. To the extent that any gaps do exist, they amount to small differences that have always existed between younger and older workers throughout history and have little to do with the Millennial generation per se.

The article continues to suggest that though there has been much said, studied, discussed and while stereotypes seem to abound, there just doesn't seem to be any real evidence of difference between the generations. It appears, according to this Harvard Business article, that there really is minimal differences in what the Millennial generation and the previous two (Generation X and Baby Boomers) want out of a career. The article states that -

For one, a group of researchers from George Washington University and the Department of Defense analyzed more than 20 published and unpublished studies examining generational differences and concluded that meaningful differences among generations probably do not exist in the workplace. The small differences that do appear are likely attributable to factors such as stage of life more than generational membership.

So what does this all mean? My key takeaway is that Millennials, Generation X, and Baby Boomers are looking for the same type of benefits from an occupation.  This is definitely not what I had supposed! I have done lots of research outlining the differences between Millennials and previous generations. And this article suggests that the differences are not attributable to generation, but rather life stage.

So if you are a Millennial, Generation X, or Baby Boomer, a Scentsy business could be a good fit.  A good fit is if you like the freedom to work where and when you like, enjoy free travel, spending more time with family and friends, and making good money.  If this sounds like you, then consider joining Scentsy and becoming a Scentsy Consultant.

Benefits of a Scentsy Business

Millennials are a good fit for Scentsy, and Scentsy is a good fit for Millennials. Come start a Scentsy business that offers the flexibility and use of technology where you can thrive.

New Scentsy Brand and Products

Scentsy Expanding into New Brand Lines

Have you heard the exciting news?!?  Scentsy Wickless Candles is expanding their brands to include completely new brands and new product lines soon.  The Scentsy brand itself started just seven short years ago and has since grown into a multi-million dollar company with over 235,000 consultants worldwide.  Scentsy is a leader in the Direct Sales industry, and continues to set new records every year for growth, innovation, and sales.  Scentsy began in the United States, but has since expanded internationally and now includes Canada, Puerto Rico, Germany, the UK, and Ireland.  Though Scentsy is open internationally, the new Scentsy brands will only be sold in Region 1 (US, Canada, Puerto Rico) for now.

New Scentsy Product Line

Scentsy just announced the addition of a new Scentsy Family brand completely different from candle warmers and scented wax.  Read more about Scentsy's new brand here.  The new brand and products will launch May 1, 2012.  I can tell you more about how you can join and sell the new Scentsy brands if you contact me.  I'd love to get you started!

Scentsy also announced two exciting line extensions of the existing Scentsy brandSincerely Scent (online scented card service) and Layers by Scentsy (bath, body and laundry fragrance products).

There is another big new Scentsy Family brand yet to be announced, and we don't know yet what that new brand will be, but Scentsy CEO Orville Thompson told us at the Scentsy Annual Convention this year that the new brand and products will be completely unrelated to Scentsy and its current product lines.  So, the new brands and products could be anything - any guesses??   The only clue we have is Scentsy's overall brand mission statement which is this:  "To bring value to the world by providing an industry-leading, family-friendly business opportunity selling creative, artistic, high-quality products that Warm the Heart, Enliven the Senses, and Inspire the Soul."

New Brands = Big Scentsy Business

The new brand extension potential is a huge opportunity for Scentsy as a company, as well as for Consultants.  Scentsy is going to be the umbrella corporation, with the new separate brand extensions under it, so every Scentsy Consultant has the option of selling and recruiting from any or all of the brands owned by Scentsy.  This also means that all sales from ANY Scentsy brand will all count for Scentsy sales, making the revenue potential shoot through the roof!  Even if I don't want to actively participate in selling any of the new Scentsy brand extensions, I will directly benefit from any of my downline or future recruits who are interested in the new brand.

Did you know that if you are a Scentsy Consultant, you can sell the new brand products too and recruit for BOTH brands? AND everything your downline sells, WHICHEVER brand, rolls up into your Scentsy team sales? SUCH big news!!

Can I sell both Scentsy, Inc. brands?

Yes!  You can sell all brands Scentsy currently has launched, as well as any future new brands and product lines.  You do NOT have to sell Scentsy if you don't want to.  You can choose to only sell one brand, a few brands, or all brands; it's up to you.  You CAN recruit for ALL brands in the Scentsy Family, whether or not you choose to sell that particular brand!

In case you're curious and would like more details of how the existing Scentsy brand will interact with new Scentsy brands for Consultants, here is a Q&A with more information, followed by a letter to Consultants from Scentsy CEO Orville Thompson.

New Scentsy Brand and Products Q&A

On November 17, 2011, Orville sent a special email to all Region 1 Consultants announcing a change in policy to prepare for the launch of a new Scentsy, Inc. brand next year. (You can read Orville's email below, after these FAQs.) Scentsy, Inc. will become the parent company of both brands; this new brand and the existing Scentsy brand we all know and love.

Consultants who simply want to sell existing Scentsy products, and not sell for other direct selling companies, will not be affected by the new policy OR the launch of new brands.

Participation in any new Scentsy brands is completely optional. The new policy is intended for Scentsy Consultants at Director-and-above level who are actively recruiting for Scentsy AND other direct selling companies. As Orville stated in his email on November 17, 2011, loyalty from leaders is required for Scentsy to achieve our goals for growth.

Q. Is Scentsy’s product offering changing or going away?

A. No. Scentsy will continue to offer all of its existing products: warmers, wax products, Scentsy Solid Perfume, Scentsy Buddies and Fragrance on the Go products.

Q. Will I still be able to sell Scentsy warmers and fragrance products?

A. Absolutely. Consultants who wish to sell Scentsy products ONLY will not be affected by this new policy.

Q. When is Scentsy launching a new brand?

A. As Orville announced at Convention in August 2011, Scentsy, Inc. will launch a new brand before Convention 2012 (July, 2012).

Q. What is the new brand?

A. We are unable to share that information at this time, for legal and intellectual property reasons. But it will be before July 2012 and it could be soon!

Q. What if I want to continue selling Scentsy but I don’t want to sell the new Scentsy Group brand?

A. You are welcome to continue to sell Scentsy; selling the new Scentsy Group brands will be completely optional.

Q. Why is Scentsy launching a new brand and implementing a new policy?

A. The new brand and the new policy will increase opportunities for our Consultants by allowing them to work with the same downline across more than one Scentsy, Inc. brand. It’s important to Scentsy that we remain true to our mission statement pledge to “… bring value to the world by providing an industry-leading family-friendly business opportunity.” These are more than just words to us. Scentsy is committed to making the promise of our mission statement a reality. Heidi and Orville want to make sure your Scentsy business has the potential to become a valuable, enduring legacy—one you can pass on to your children and grandchildren. This is why it is critical for Scentsy to launch new brands, continue to expand, and achieve our goal to become a Fortune 500 company.

Q. What if I want to sell Scentsy and also sell for another direct selling company?

A. You are welcome to sell for Scentsy and any other direct selling company. If you are Director-and-above level for Scentsy AND also have a team for another direct selling company, you are welcome to continue selling for both companies. You will continue to receive commissions on your sales and your downline sales, as described in the Scentsy Compensation Plan. However, you will NOT be eligible to receive 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Generation Director Bonuses.

Q. Can I keep my downline if I want to continue to sell Scentsy AND also sell the new Scentsy, Inc. brand?

A. Absolutely. One of the reasons we’re creating the new brand is to increase opportunities for our Consultants by allowing them to work with the same downline across more than one Scentsy, Inc. brand.

Q. Can I keep my downline if I want to continue to sell Scentsy AND also sell products for another direct selling company?

A. Yes, you can keep your downline, and are expected to continue to properly lead your Scentsy team. However, you will not receive your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Generation Director TWV Bonuses as illustrated in the Scentsy Compensation Plan.

Q. Am I restricted from selling for other direct selling companies?

A. No.  You are welcome to sell for Scentsy and any other direct selling company, but when you reach Director status, you must choose from which company you will receive Generational Bonuses.

Q. Why are you restricting me from growing a team with Scentsy AND with another direct selling company?

A. We are not. If you are Director-and-above level for Scentsy AND also have a team for another direct selling company, you are welcome to continue selling and building a team for both companies. You will continue to receive commissions on sales, sales bonuses, and TWV bonuses. However, you will NOT be eligible to receive 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Generation Director TWV Bonuses as illustrated in the Scentsy Compensation Plan.

But where others may be ready to cash in and coast, Heidi and I feel compelled to push onward. There are still families we have not reached.

We understand each of you enjoys a different relationship with Scentsy, based on your goals and desires. Current Scentsy policy states that Scentsy Directors and above will not receive generational bonuses if they build a downline with any other direct selling company, regardless of its products.

At Convention this year, I announced Scentsy would someday rise to become a Fortune 500 company. To do this, I also announced that by Convention 2012, we would launch an entirely new brand and product line, to which existing Scentsy Consultants and their teams would have full access. While still enjoying the benefits of a Workstation, your incredible teams, and your existing and passionate customers, you would be able to sell these products using your existing downline and sponsor new Consultants into your existing team.

There will be no shortage of business and new opportunities for anyone who remains focused, steadfast, and avoids unnecessary conflict, but we want you to be fully committed to Scentsy and its current and future brands. We’re asking for your loyalty, and will require loyalty from our leadership. Once Scentsy Consultants reach Director level, they have a substantial number of people relying on them. It mocks the values we represent when a Consultant abandons a successful Scentsy team to repeat their efforts with another company, yet still collects bonuses on the performance of a Scentsy team they no longer fully support.

This new policy will allow us to maintain accountability among our leaders to train, support, and influence their teams as we continue to grow and as our competition changes and new challenges arise. We will not enforce the new policy until we officially launch our new brand line next year. If you are satisfied with the state of your Scentsy business as it now stands, this policy will probably not apply to you. But we’re sharing it with you now, months before it will go into effect, because we want each of you to decide where you stand.

As we continue to strive for that Fortune 500 designation, as we continue to broaden the scope of our contribution to the world, the new Scentsy brands we launch will give you the potential to reach and exceed your professional and financial goals; the potential to build a legacy. We realize we may lose some great Consultants with this policy and that is unfortunate, but it’s better to have fewer Consultants who are focused and committed with whom we can lock arms and move forward.

For us to succeed in reaching a new horizon, we must remain aligned. We’re on the brink of making direct selling history, and Heidi and I are thrilled to reach such an immeasurable milestone with you. How To Become a Scentsy Consultant

Join the Scentsy Team and Become a Consultant

When you decide to start a Scentsy business there are a few things you need to know.  First, you will be called a "Scentsy Consultant" which is why you see this term used a lot by other people who have Scentsy businesses.  Basically, you're a Scentsy Rep, a Scentsy Distributor, or a Scentsy Dealer... same thing.  You are an independent consultant with Scentsy and not actually employed by Scentsy.  In simpler terms, you are signing up to be able to sell Scentsy products for a commission.

Signing Up With Scentsy

You can sign up with Scentsy for $99 plus tax and shipping charges and Scentsy will send you a Starter Kit.  The Scentsy Starter Kit will include some Scentsy products as well as business tools for you such as business cards, brochures, catalogs, and even a personalized website where customers can place orders.  This website is located on the Scentsy domain (you can view mine by clicking on the "shop online" links or by clicking here).   The website is free for 3 months when you sign up and only $10 a month after that if you want to continue to use it.  All of the items in the Scentsy Starter Kit are designed to help you learn about all of the Scentsy products and to become a successful consultant and be able to start selling Scentsy right away.

Pick the Best Scentsy Sponsor

The next step is very important if you really want to run a successful Scentsy business and make money.  When you sign up with Scentsy you are signed up with a sponsor.  If you sign up through my website, then I will be your Scentsy Sponsor and will help you have success as a Scentsy Consultant.  The sponsor is there to help you build your business.  Let me teach you about the business, how to talk to customers, and how to plan the months ahead, and how to make a plan for your Scentsy business that will work for you.  It's all free...so make sure you utilize me as your Scentsy sponsor as your best resource.

A good Scentsy Sponsor is much more important than I realized when I signed up.  I lucked out and love my sponsor, and love working with her, but that's not always the case for some.  Choose a sponsor who loves Scentsy and is proud of what they do and passionate about both the products and the business opportunity offered so they can help you.  There's no reason to do this on your own!  Find a Consultant who has been running a Scentsy business for awhile and who have been successful help you do the same.  There's so much to love about Scentsy and so much to learn from a great Scentsy sponsor!

How Do I Change Scentsy Sponsors?

I get asked how to switch a Scentsy Sponsor often, so I'll include this here too... if you sign up to sell Scentsy and you don't like your sponsor, you never hear from her, or you just don't work together well, it's really hard to switch.  Basically, you have to contact Scentsy to have your account cancelled, then go completely inactive (sell nothing) for 6 months more and re-enroll under a new Sponsor of your choice.  Definitely something to think about.

During the signup process you'll need to select a URL for your website so be thinking of that. The URL of your website will look like this - https://WhateverYouWant.scentsy.us - so the part in Italics is the part that you can customize. The ending - the .us - depends on what country you are in and so it will reflect that.

2. Set a Goal for Scentsational Start

Make a Goal To Earn Scentsational Start Level 3. 

One of the single greatest indicators of success as a Scentsy Consultant is earning Scentsational Start. The odds of being successful as a Scentsy Consultant increases dramatically if you get your hustle on and earn Scentsational Start in your first 70 days.

To earn Level 3 you'll need to sell 2,500 in PRV and help 6 new team members be active.

Here is a breakdown of the different Scentsational Start Levels.  A consultant can only earn Scentsational Start awards in their first 70 days. (BTW - "Active" means they've sold 200 PRV in one month)

In addition to the awesome start you'll give your business, you'll also:

    1. Receive $200 FREE Product Credit! So you'll be able to spend $200 on your favorite Scentsy products for FREE!
    2. A Certificate of Achievement
    3. A Lapel Pin
    4. Recognition at Scentsy Events
    5. A Scentsational Start paperweight
    6. You'll receive a permanent 5% pay raise so you'll earn 25% commission on every Scentsy product you sell for the rest of forever! And if you sell over 2,000 in PRV in one month you'll earn 30%!
