What Scentsy Warmer Would George Washington Have in His Home?
So taking what we know about the first Commander-in- Chief we can make some assumptions as to what kind of Scentsy products he'd have in his home. The first thing that came to mind was Cherry Trees. Scentsy used to have a Cherry Tree Scentsy Warmer but that's since been discontinued so we can cross that off the list. That was a given. Scentsy does have a new, fantastic scent called Sugared Cherry which would be a perfect scent for this time of year and given his penchant for Cherry Trees I think he would love the whispy, clean aroma of sweet, sugared cherries...who doesn't?!
Interesting fact - George Washington is the only US President that didn't live in the White House. He selected the site for the White House and the approved the design but finished his term as President before it was completed. George Washington lived in a home in Philadelphia, PA which was the functioning Capitol of the USA at the time.
In 1794 George Washington signed the Naval Act authorizing the construction of 6 frigates thereby creating the Navy. So while I'm sure Mr. Washington was just as big a fan of the ocean as any other guy I don't see him theming his whole home around it. The ocean does tend to be a popular theme for bathrooms.
Come to think of it, they didn't have indoor plumbing yet so we're talking about the outhouse now. I'm guessing most folks didn't really care what their outhouses looked like inside since they'd just as soon get out of a stinky, bug infected, freezing or hot outhouse (depending on the time of year), rather than enjoy the seaside decor. So we're not looking for a Scentsy Warmer, now we're looking for a pleasant aroma when duty calls. So if I were Mr. Washingtons Scentsy Consultant back in the day I would have encouraged him to line the walls of ye ol' outhouse with Scent Circles that celebrate his creation of the Navy. Some classics are Scentsy Ocean, Scentsy By the Sea, Scentsy Atlantic Air, Scentsy Bonfire Beach, or Scentsy Pacific Daydream. Martha would have been on my side with this one.
Back in the home, George had a lot of hobbies and so there are plenty of Scentsy Warmers I would have probably suggested for him and Martha. One might have been the "I Love Dogs" Scentsy Warmer. Apparently, among his hobbies of farming and hunting, Mr. Washington also enjoyed breeding dogs. Probably hunting dogs, who knows, maybe even French Poodles to thank the French for their support. Either way, the man liked dogs. The second suggestion below "Moose Valley" Scentsy Warmer Wrap is a nod to his love of hunting.
The last two Scentsy Warmers I'd recommend to Martha. I'm guessing she enjoyed the occasional tea and the English Breakfast Scentsy Warmer would be a fitting warmer fancy enough to grace Mt. Vernon or the President's house in Philadelphia. I'd also recommend a Scentsy Diffuser and point her in the direction of the Scentsy Enliven Diffuser with it's classic design and clean, white finish. Apparently, the hubs, Mr. George Washington, had a passion for interior decorating and design and meticulously decorated his Mount Vernon home, where he hosted elaborate dinner parties so an elaborate Scentsy Diffuser would be a great addition.

Launching a Scentsy business can be kind of a crazy experience. I mean, you just started your own business! You are finally your own boss! But that coin has two sides - not only are you your own boss, but now it all depends on you! That thought can be very scary.
Okay, pause, before you get sweaty palms, sit - letâs break it down.
You Can Do It
First, seriously you got this. Really, I donât doubt you can rock this. Know this, 1 great party or 2 good parties and youâve paid off your startup costs. How cool is that? Everything after that is icing on the cake!

The other day as I was at Costco filling up my car with gasoline. While I filled up, I overheard a conversation the woman in front of me was having on her phone. She was telling the person on the other end that their mutual friend was making a huge mistake; she was signing up for one of those "awful pyramid schemesâ.
Is Scentsy A Pyramid Scheme?
She continued her conversation saying things like:
âYou know all those kinds of things are just scamsâ
âI hope she doesnât actually spend any money to go to their big meeting, what a wasteâ
âItâs never going to work, why is she even doing something like that?â
Can You Really Make Money?
So, as I filled up the car with gas, paid for with the credit card our Scentsy Consultant business pays off every month. đ *Scentsy income disclosure.*
Direct Selling Perception
I couldnât believe just how much hatred this woman had for direct selling. Honestly, I didnât think there were still people in the world that held that perception of direct selling. I'm not naive enough to think that everyone loves direct selling, but I was surprised at just how belligerent she was towards it. But I like to think that this woman is really just a victim of misinformation. She has never had the opportunity to actually get to know people working direct sales, and see their success.
Real Success
The reality is that 20 million people are involved in the $36.12 billion direct selling industry.People involved in direct selling have a higher percentage of annual income over $50,000 when compared to all Americans. (58% vs. 50%)
Contrary to opinion, direct sellers also have a higher level of average education than the average American: 52% of are college graduates compared to 28% and 99% have high school diplomas compared to 85%.
Benefits of Direct Sales
Now, letâs talk about the rewards of being a Scentsy Consultant or direct seller. First, as in any business to look exclusively at the money would be limiting and not indicative of the real reasons people choose direct selling.
For example, when I applied for corporate jobs I always asked about things like healthcare, 401k, paid time off, culture, and work-life balance. All of these were factors when I considered the job. Salary is just one thing to consider. Beyond income, research indicates that individuals enjoy the fringe benefits like the flexibility of being their own bosses. We get to set our own hours and schedule, as well as ever having to ask for time off!
Income from Sales
When you talk about income as a Scentsy Consultant (or any direct sales) you have to remember that first, direct selling is, well, still selling. We make a commission from the sales we make. As much as we talk about the other activities we spend the majority of our time doing like mentoring and recruiting, we still sell. In Scentsy, we have to sell a certain amount to get paid on the production of our team.
Secondly, Scentsy Consultants are paid monthly and every month is different. We don't receive a set salary, or any guaranteed amount. For instance, some months - like October and November - are huge sales months with consumers gearing up for the holidays. Those months, the money you make as a Scentsy Consultant will more likely be higher than other months. Commissions income is dependent on your own sales, so you do have control over your paycheck. You can work to make the amount you want, or to make consistent checks, but it will most likely vary naturally.
Thirdly, there is a large percentage of Consultants who join a direct selling company to buy their favorite products at a discount, NOT to make a living off it. And since individuals are paid based on their work and level of effort and time dedicated to their business, those who are working it like a part-time job earn a part-time income. It's important to remember that is exactly what they want out of it.
Direct Sales Average Income
The first data I found went back to 2011 when Amy Robinson, a spokesperson for the Direct Selling Association, said that the median annual income for direct sales consultants in 2011 was $2,400. As I dug further I found that research done by Harris Poll in 2014 provided some more up to date information. According to the research -
93% of direct sellers reported earning money in the last 12 months
27% earn less than $1,000 in the last 12 months, 51% earned between $1,000-$49,999,
with the remaining 15% earning more than $50,000.
Doing some simple math, that means that 2.4 million direct sellers earned more than $50,000 based on 2014 figures. The article points out that beats the national average salary for men and women. It also is more than the national median annual salary for all Americans working a 40-hour workweek as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Dec. 2013.
Now, thatâs only 15% of those involved in direct selling, but thatâs also about the percentage of consultants actually working their business. The research indicates that 70% of Consultants spend less than 15 hours/week on their business. An important note to add here is that those 15% earning that $50,000 and up are doing it how, when, and where they want to.
The answer is of course, yes. The most important things to remember are;
Itâs not a steady flat rate - salary type of income. Some months are low, other months are high.
The research clearly indicates, and my experience supports, that income is based on your personal work ethic and determination.
Direct selling is selling. You are paid for your sales and in many cases you canât get paid on the sales of your team if you yourself havenât sold a certain minimum.
Part-time work often produces part-time income. This can change as you grow a team, but you have to build it.
To earn the higher income it will take time and persistence. The only variable in that equation is your hard work. Thatâs the only thing that can speed up the process.
When you talk about income in direct selling you have to start with a few key understanding that direct selling is, well, selling. So individuals are paid based on their work and level of effort and time dedicated to their business and every month is different as some months - like October and November - are huge sales months with consumers gearing up for the holidays. Secondly, there is a large percentage of Consultants that join a direct selling company to buy their favorite products at a discount, NOT to make a living off it.
Extra Income
Direct Selling, as an example being a Scentsy Consultant, can provide a good side income. It can help cover bills, pay off debt, and prepare for retirement. It can also be much more than and support a crazy family of 7 like mine! It just simply depends on your work ethic and what you value.
Flexible Side Hustle
If benefits like a flexible schedule, more time with family, being your own boss, and setting your own hours are appealing to you, then you would be an awesome Scentsy consultant. As long as you are comfortable as an entrepreneur with risk and have a good work ethic, then it sounds like itâs a great fit for you. If not, and you prefer punching in and out for a guaranteed paycheck, then this might not be your ideal way to make money.

Recruiting can also be a very nerve-wracking experience and leave both the Scentsy Consultant and the potential recruit feeling awkward and weird. Nobody likes awkward and weird. Here are three things that Iâve found consistently help me and my team get our game face on and have better, more natural conversations with a better success rate.
First, change your perspective.
Too often our perspective when weâre recruiting is not dissimilar to begging and pleading. We make a goal to recruit so many or to have so many conversations with people so diligently we head out to âdo our dutyâ, get out of our comfort zone, and find some new teammates. And before we know it, seconds into our first conversation, we freeze and have that, âI want to barf. Why am I doing this?â feeling in our gut.
Perception is Reality. To change your reality change your perspective. If the thought of recruiting makes you sweat and feels like a massive burden on your back than, in my experience, you arenât completely comfortable with your identity as a Scentsy Consultant OR you have doubts about achieving your goals as a Scentsy Consultant. Accept who you are and the choice you made. You are a rationale person and made a decision to join for a good reason so donât let fears about how others will perceive you deter you from your goal. You never sweat or go numb when you tell your friends, family, party guests about your favorite restaurant so take that same mentality and apply it to offering the opportunity. You are simply sharing something cool with the people you are talking with.
Second - Relax; Don't surrender to desperation.
You want them to join so badly, for whatever reason, that you start to become slimey forceful. Nobody, even the Consultant being slimey forceful, likes that - nobody wants to be that person, and surrendering to the temptation to become like this in a conversation is actually a massive turnoff to whoever youâre talking with. Itâs great to have goals but donât let an intense focus on your goal handicap the execution such that you are focused purely on the outcome You Want. Relax and be honest with yourself and whoever youâre talking with.
The reality is, the more you talk to people about becoming a Scentsy Consultant, the more appealing it is because it is more natural, casual, and unintimidating. So, avoid creating pressure-filled conversations by being honest, open and unashamed and youâll find your conversations are much more fluid and more effective. Disconnect yourself from the outcome and focus on how much you love what you are offering and your conversations will be much more natural, unique, and actually much more effective.
Third - Share your Stories.
Your personal stories, and the stories of other Scentsy Consultants, are like underestimated jedi masters in a recruiting conversation. More impactful than every minute detail about operating a Scentsy business is your personal story. Iâm not making this up, itâs actually science. Donald Calne, a well-known neurologist said -
"The essential difference between emotion and reason is that emotion leads to action, while reason leads to conclusions."
Iâve had hundreds, if not thousands of conversations with individuals about becoming a Scentsy Consultant and Iâve found that individuals seemingly starving for every possible detail about being a Scentsy Consultant are really NOT interested in joining. Nine times out of ten, they arenât even considering it. They have negative stereotypes of direct selling and want you to reaffirm those OR in their heart of hearts they want to join and be their own boss but are too afraid so they hope your responses will feed their fears about joining Scentsy so they donât have leave their comfort zone.
So, what kind of stories are people looking for? In particular people want to know 3 main things 1.How Scentsy has impacted your life, (Travel, Extra moola, be home with family, flexible schedule, etc.) 2. Why you joined, (student loan debt, spouse lost job, love the product, always wanted to be my own boss, etc.) and 3. What your favorite benefit is of being a Scentsy Consultant. (Cruises, Self-development, money, getting to be my kids coach, etc.)Â Attach a short, concise story to each of those three, and youâre good to go. Remember, nothing will sink a great story faster than too many, unnecessary details. For whatever reason, we want to include far too many details in our stories. Remember, youâve got 30 seconds to tell your story, keep it simple and include only what advances the core message of your story. It can even be one sentence like - âI joined Scentsy and paid off my startup costs in one monthâ. Or, âI took my kids to DisneyWorld with my Scentsy Incomeâ, or âMy hubs lost his job and my Scentsy income kept us afloatâ, or âMy husband quit his job to come work with me as a Scentsy Consultantâ, or even âScentsy pays for my monthly phone billâ. Whatever it is, the reason stories are so powerful is because people can relate to them. You can even make it more relatable by saying something like âSo, if youâd love to have your phone bill paid for every month, then you ought to take a look at Scentsyâ.
Following these 3 simple steps will make recruiting conversations feel much, much more natural and will, in turn, increase their effectiveness. Every now and then I tell people how my husband and I support* our family with our Direct Sales business. Inevitably the conversation leads to this question, âOh, so itâs like a pyramid scheme?â.
No, Scentsy is not a pyramid scheme. After a while, I began to wonder what exactly is a pyramid scheme. Why do so many people consider any direct selling business to be one?
What Is a Pyramid Scheme
So first, what is a pyramid scheme? When in doubt, turn to Wikipedia! đ â
âPyramid schemesâalso referred to as franchise fraud or chain referral schemesâare marketing and investment frauds in which an individual is offered a distributorship or franchise to market a particular product. Participants earn the real profit, not by the sale of the product, but by the sale of new distributorships. Emphasis on selling franchises rather than the product eventually leads to a point where the supply of potential investors is exhausted and the pyramid collapses.â
Often, the term pyramid scheme is associated with direct selling businesses. However, it actually happens just as much if not more often in the financial sector.
Examples
I did a Google search for the term pyramid scheme. The first result was an article about a Montana woman. She pleaded guilty to using money from new investors to make payments to earlier investors, between 2008 and 2016. The article states that "she's accused of taking $1.5 million from 28 different people. At least four of the investors were identified as vulnerable persons because of their age, and one was mentally disabled."
That type of "business" is bad, and should get a bad wrap. It's also illegal (with good reason).

How to Know if a Business Is Legitimate
Below is a video from the Direct Selling Association in Australia called "Understanding Illegal Pyramid Schemes". The video outlines they key points of how to identify whether a business is a legitimate direct selling business or a pyramid scheme.

MLM organizations
Specifically with regards to Multi-level marketing organizations the same Wikipedia page states â
"...have a real product to sell. More importantly, MLM's actually sell their product to members of the general public, without requiring these consumers to pay anything extra or to join the MLM system. MLM's may pay commissions to a long string of distributors, but these commission are paid for real retail sales, not for new recruits."
Selling of Goods is Key
In summary, any business model in which members make money from the signup fee of someone else rather than any actual selling of goods or services is a pyramid scheme. Additionally, in exchange, the organization promises its new members a share of the money taken from every additional member that they recruit. If a percentage of your sign up fee goes directly to those who enrolled you, or if you are a member of a business that rewards you financially when someone joins under you â then you are part of a pyramid scheme.

Pyramid Schemes come in all shapes and sizes but all make massive promises. Generally speaking, these schemes also leave their members, except the few at the top, worse off. This same Wiki page tells of about a dozen notable pyramid schemes all over the world. These businesses have caused riots and robbed thousands, if not millions, of people lots of money.
Pyramid schemes are illegal ploys to rob people. They promise an income to convince more and more people to pay the enrollment fee, of which they get a portion.
Structured to Defraud
In a Forbes magazine article by Nancy Collamer, she clarifies that âMLMâs are sometimes erroneously referred to as âpyramid schemesâ â companies structured with the intent of defrauding the publicâ. These organizations are designed to make money, but NOT generated by the sale of any product or service. Money is made when individuals pay an enrollment fee - to a small group or individual at the top and are illegal.
Is Scentsy a Pyramid?
In Scentsy, I do get potential leadership bonuses from the amount my team sells. However, I don't get a sign-up fee when they join. I am paid for helping new team members join and start a successful business, selling actual products.
